Arsenal Receive Major Riccardo Calafiori Boost as Real Madrid Shift Focus to Marc Cucurella
Arsenal have received a significant boost in their efforts to retain key members of Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer, with reports indicating that Riccardo Calafiori is now unlikely to leave the Emirates Stadium despite previous interest from Real Madrid.
According to The Mirror, the Spanish giants have effectively ended their pursuit of the Italian defender after securing a deal for Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella. The move is expected to strengthen Real Madrid’s options on the left side of defense and remove the need for an additional signing in Calafiori’s position.
Calafiori joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2024 in a deal worth up to £42 million. Since arriving in North London, the versatile defender has demonstrated his ability to operate both as a centre-back and left-back, making him an important asset within Arteta’s squad.
Although injuries have disrupted parts of his Arsenal career, the 24-year-old has still made a notable impact whenever available, featuring in 65 matches and earning praise for his defensive qualities and composure on the ball.
The report suggests that Real Madrid’s interest has cooled considerably following their acquisition of Cucurella, whose transfer fee is believed to be around £51 million. As a result, a move for Calafiori is now considered highly unlikely.
Arsenal are also understood to have no intention of selling the Italian international during the current transfer window. With three years remaining on his contract, the club remains in a strong position regarding his future, although discussions over a potential extension could emerge in the coming months.
While Calafiori appears set to remain at the Emirates, Arsenal may still need to sanction player departures to create space for new signings. The Gunners are expected to strengthen several areas of the squad as they look to build on their recent Premier League triumph and maintain their status among England’s elite clubs.
Several players have been linked with potential exits. Wingers Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have both attracted transfer speculation, while midfielders Christian Norgaard and Ethan Nwaneri have also been mentioned in reports regarding possible departures. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround the future of striker Gabriel Jesus.
Any funds generated through player sales are likely to be reinvested as Arsenal seek to reinforce a squad capable of challenging for major honours once again next season.
