Fabrizio Romano Drops Massive Arsenal Transfer Bombshell Involving Sandro Tonali

Arsenal Receive Major Boost in Pursuit of Sandro Tonali as Manchester United Cool Interest

Arsenal have been handed a significant advantage in the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali after Manchester United reportedly decided against pursuing the Italian international due to the high cost of a potential deal.

According to reports from Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle could be open to selling Tonali this summer as the club seeks to navigate financial pressures and comply with profit and sustainability regulations. The Magpies are said to value the midfielder at more than €100 million (£86 million).

Tonali has long been admired by Arsenal, with the North London club exploring a move during the January transfer window, although negotiations failed to progress. Interest in the 26-year-old has since resurfaced, particularly as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad following Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign and their run to the UEFA Champions League final.

The Italian midfielder is believed to be keen on continuing his career in Europe’s elite club competition. Despite helping Newcastle reach the Champions League Round of 16 last season, the club’s failure to secure qualification for next season could influence his future plans.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United, despite tracking Tonali for an extended period, have effectively withdrawn from the race. The club reportedly considers both the transfer fee and salary demands too expensive at this stage.

“Manchester United are not going for Sandro Tonali at this stage,” Romano stated. “The player has been on their shortlist for some time, but United believe he is too expensive.”

The development potentially leaves Arsenal in a stronger position should they decide to intensify their interest. Reports from The Athletic previously indicated that Tonali’s representatives had contacted Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta to gauge the club’s willingness to pursue a deal.

Romano further claimed that Arsenal have recently made enquiries regarding the midfielder, placing them firmly among the clubs monitoring the situation.

While Arsenal already boast considerable midfield depth through Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Christian Norgaard, and emerging talent Myles Lewis-Skelly, Tonali’s experience, versatility, and technical quality make him an attractive option for the Premier League champions.

Romano added that Manchester City could also emerge as contenders, although their current priority remains Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

With Newcastle’s financial situation, Arsenal’s interest, and Manchester United stepping aside, Tonali’s future is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the summer window.
