Marc Guehi Arsenal Transfer ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’, Says Sherwood

Former Premier league manager Tim Sherwood has thrown out a warning to Marc Guehi, suggesting that the 24 year old centre back would be a fool to join Arsenal – and should instead think about making a move to Liverpool.

Guehi has become one of the hottest properties in the Premier league after consistently putting in good performances for Crystal Palace & also growing in importance in Englands defensive setup.

However Sherwoods thinking is that Arsenals interest doesnt add up for either the player or the club, given the fact they already have an established first choice central defensive pairing.

Speaking out on Sky Sports News, Sherwood reckons Guehi would be fighting a losing battle to get regular football at the Emirates Stadium – stuck behind William Saliba & Gabriel Magalhaes in the pecking order. and would never get in the team if Saliba & Gabriel are fit.

“Why on earth would Guehi want to join Arsenal?” Sherwood (as he put it) “He wont get a game if Saliba & Gabriel are fit – I think he’s a decent player but I just dont think he’s got the quality to muscle in on their places”

Sherwood went even further in his views, suggesting that Liverpool & Manchester City present much more obvious routes into a starting 11 – especially given the recent injury worries in those clubs defensive ranks.

“I think there’s more chance of Guehi getting a game at Manchester City & certainly at Liverpool” he added
“So, it makes no sense at all from Arsenals point of view & from Guehis point of view it makes no sense whatsoever – he’d be daft to get himself into that situation”

It looks like Arsenal eye up a different centre back as rival clubs circle

According to The Athletic its understood that Arsenal are keeping an eye on Guehis situation but they’re not willing to meet Crystals valuation – instead planning to snap up a different centre back on a free transfer next summer when his contract runs out.

Manchester city on the other hand are said to be up for a move at the very end of this month, with Pep Guardiola’s team going through some rough times on the defensive due to those injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol. There is a feeling that City might need some extra depth on the pitch asap which could give Guehi a chance to break into the big time much quicker and be playing in some of Europe’s top leagues.

The Liverpool move that fell apart at the last minute

Guehi was absolutely on the cusp of joining Liverpool back at the end of the summer transfer window, with Palace agreeing on a 25 million quid deal but then rather dramatically pulling out in the last few minutes of Deadline Day, because they just couldn’t get someone to replace him

New Liverpool head coach, Arne Slot, later explained just how close the Reds were to finally bringing Guehi on board and how he was pretty gutted by the collapse:

“Would i be stupid to deny the fact we were basically on the verge of signing Guehi – that’s just a given, out in the open” Slot said, speaking with GOAL.

“But these things happen to all of us at some point don’t they – all of our players must have been close to signing with other clubs at some time or other and then things threw a spanner in the works at the last minute”

Slot also made it clear that Liverpool were in the market for a player like Guehi, and when an opportunity comes up they will actively go for it

“We definitely would have liked to have signed him – of course we would. If we think we can strengthen the team then we never give it a second thought and go for it. That’s basically what we tried to do.

“It is a shame for us and the player – he is in a pretty good place at Palace anyway where he went and won the FA Cup and Community Shield. lets just see how this all plays out for him and for us”

Some big European clubs are keeping tabs on Guehi

Guehi’s profile is rising by the day and now Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Tottenham are all reportedly keeping an eye on him, ahead of the next transfer window.

With his contract running down and multiple top clubs circling Guehi is basically at a cross roads and might have to make some pretty big decisions about his career – decisions that could really shape his future in all sorts of ways.
