Arsenal players, supporters and the wider Women’s Super League community came together in an emotional show of solidarity for Matildas star Kyra Cooney-Cross after the midfielder returned to Australia to be with her mother following a devastating cancer diagnosis.

The 23-year-old Arsenal player revealed earlier this week that she had flown back to Queensland after her mother, Jess, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer.

Sharing the deeply personal news on social media, Cooney-Cross described the moment her family’s life changed.

“A few days ago, our world changed forever,” she wrote on Instagram.
“My amazing mum, Jess, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). It’s a rare and aggressive cancer, and there is no cure.”

The announcement prompted an immediate outpouring of support from teammates, fans and rival clubs, highlighting the close-knit nature of the women’s game beyond the pitch.

Ahead of Arsenal’s Women’s Super League clash with Manchester United on Saturday night (AEDT), the Gunners paid tribute to their absent teammate in a powerful pre-match gesture. Players warmed up wearing shirts bearing Cooney-Cross’ name and her squad number, 32, in a clear sign of unity and support.

The match, played at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in north London, drew a crowd of 37,000 spectators, one of the largest attendances of the WSL season. Outside the stadium, a group of Arsenal supporters marched together holding handmade signs that read:
“We love you Kyra and Jess.”

The emotional tributes continued inside the ground. In the 32nd minute of the match — a symbolic reference to Cooney-Cross’ squad number — fans across the stadium held their signs aloft as applause rippled through the stands, briefly pausing the intensity of the contest.

Arsenal manager Renée Slegers acknowledged the moment after the game, stressing that football had taken a back seat to real-life priorities.

“There’s bigger things in life,” Slegers said.
“Of course, we miss Kyra here, but Kyra is where she needs to be right now, with the family. Our thoughts are with her, Jess and the rest of the family.”

Manchester United send message of support

Manchester United also joined in the show of support, with head coach Marc Skinner delivering a heartfelt message following the final whistle.

“I just want to share a message for Kyra and her family,” Skinner said.
“From everyone at Manchester United, we wish you all the very best. The football family’s with you, and I hope that you can find a happy space.”

The match itself, the first WSL fixture following the winter break, ended in a goalless draw, but the result felt secondary on a night defined by compassion rather than competition.
