Arsenal just can’t seem to stop snapping up top-notch left-sided defenders.

Even with Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Jurrien Timber already providing depth on the left side of the pitch, Mikel Arteta is reportedly after one more – and that one is Real Madrid’s highly promising teenage star Víctor Valdepenas Talavera.

There are reports that the Gunners are trying to tie down a deal for the 19-year-old, though Real Madrid hold a pretty strong hand with his contract running until 2029 and a pretty hefty release clause.

Arteta’s track record in developing young players could very well be just the thing to tempt them. So here’s the lowdown on Víctor Valdepenas Talavera: an exciting young defender who’s caught Arsenal’s eye in the midst of transfer talk.

Victor Valdepenas: The Story

Víctor Valdepenas Talavera was born on October 20, 2006. He started his football journey through the Rayo Vallecano youth system before getting snapped up by Real Madrid when he was just 11 years old back in 2018.

After a brief spell at Leganés he returned to the Bernabéu in 2022 – and since then has rapidly climbed through the ranks of one of Europe’s top youth academies.

Promoted to Real Madrid Castilla in January 2025, Valdepenas has been a standout performer in Spain’s third tier (Primera Federación) during the 2025-26 season – appearing in 19 matches so far.

He’s got 2 goals and 1 assist to his name – numbers that are really impressive for a defender at his level.

One of the goals he scored was in a Premier League Under-21 International Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers – which helped Raúl Arbeloa’s team to a 1-0 win.

In December 2025 he got his senior Real Madrid debut, playing 78 minutes in a 2-1 La Liga win against Alavés. And – despite being a bit unfortunate to be involved in conceding the equaliser due to a mix-up with an offside trap – he showed off some impressive skills, winning 3 tackles and completing 94% of his passes. He ended up getting a lot of praise for that, even though his role in the match was a minor one.

After the match former boss Xabi Alonso came out and publicly said that the ‘mistake’ had been made – but later apologised and acknowledged the young player’s potential.

Valdepenas has also appeared for Spain’s Under-19 team, though he did miss out on the European Championships final when Spain lost to the Netherlands.

Victor Valdepenas Style of Play: The Modern Defender That Arsenal Craves

Standing at an impressive 6 foot 2 and with a left foot, Valdepenas is the very definition of a modern day defender – equally at home at either left back or centre back. And its no surprise, this season he’s been rotated through both positions about 50/50 for Castilla.

His aerial prowess is on full display in both boxes, but one thing really stands out – his knack for scoring set-piece goals (like that absolute hammer of a near post header which looked a dead ringer for Gabriel Martinellis famous strike). On the ball, the guy is as calm as can be under pressure, uses the ball well, picks up pace with some silky smooth turns, and even pops up with a decent finish every now and then with his good foot.

Defensively hes a genius at reading the game, times his slides to perfection, and shows great discipline and restraint – he’s picked up a tidy 4 yellow cards across all competitions. And if youre an Arsenal fan then this is probably the bit that has you most excited: he loves to drop deep and get stuck into midfield from left back and will have no problem whatsoever taking on & beating multiple opponents.

In many ways, he mirrors Riccardo Calafiori – a versatile, attacking, physically dominant player.

Arsenal Transfer Verdict: Does Victor Valdepenas fit Mikel Artetas Plans?

With Calafiori and Hincapie hogging left back and left sided centre back options thin behind Gabriel Magalhaes (especially since he’s had to play through injuries and fatigue in the cups) Valdepenas is a smart long term investment.

At 28 Gabriel is coming into his prime and could be dominating the Premier League for years to come (think Thiago Silva) – but you can never plan on having too much depth. Who better for a young left footed defender to learn from than one of the Premier Leagues best?

Real Madrid will want a king’s ransom for him – his contract goes on till 2029 and includes a reported €50m release clause – and Arsenal have other priorities next season (in 2026) like wingers and central midfielders. However if the price is negotiable and Artetas vision can win over the youngster then this could be a master stroke signing.

Arsenal fans – are you getting excited about another versatile defender or do we already have enough? The Valdepenas to Arsenal saga is just heating up – keep an eye out for this one!
