Ethan Nwaneri Set for Marseille Loan After Arteta Rethink

Earlier this month, reports suggested Arsenal and Nwaneri were not considering a temporary exit, with Arteta emphasizing the importance of every squad member.

Arsenal have finally agreed to let go of their highly rated youngster Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille for the rest of this 2025/26 season. And it all seems to have been the brainchild of their boss Mikel Arteta.

The 18 year old attacking midfielder from Arsenal’s academy has found himself stuck with hardly any chances to play for the Gunners, what with them still pushing for that title and all.

His fate is sealed though – a season on loan to Marseille – a move some people at the club are still trying to wrap their head around since they’d initially told everyone they weren’t letting him leave in January.

Why Arsenal Suddenly Had a Change of Heart on Nwaneri’s Loan Move

Only a few weeks ago, there were reports going around saying Arsenal and Nwaneri had no plans to send him on loan. And Arteta himself was saying how much every single player in the squad meant to him.

But I guess when you only get 4 starts in an entire season and you haven’t even played in the Premier League since November you start to wonder if maybe – just maybe – getting some playing time elsewhere isn’t such a rubbish idea after all.

It was Arteta again – who played a major part in this switch, especially because he gets on so well with Marseille‘s head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Arteta and De Zerbi evidently have a bit of a thing going on – De Zerbi’s approach to the game is all about keeping the ball and that’s exactly the sort of thing that’d get the best out of Nwaneri.

Actually, it all sounds a bit like whats happened before – like the way William Saliba went to Marseille a few years back and then ended up being a key player in Arteta’s side.

Marseille will stump up a serious wad of cash for Nwaneri – though that loan fee will shrink as he racks up appearances – and we’re talking a possible hit of around €4 million if he ends up playing every single game.

This deal is pretty cut and dry – no option for Marseille to buy him, which means Nwaneri can pack up his bags and head back to the Emirates in the summer as planned.

It’s worth noting that Nwaneri had quite a few other suitors – Crystal Palace and West Ham in the Premier League, plus a few other European clubs were interested – but Marseille’s Champions League status and the fact that the manager De Zerbi is involved seems to have won him over.

Nwaneri is set to head off to France on Wednesday – you know, after the Arsenal vs Inter Milan Champions League match.

Nwaneri’s Arsenal Journey So Far

Nwaneri made quite an entrance as Arsenal’s youngest ever debutant – he had all the makings of something big. Despite making 12 appearances this season, he’s still had a pretty limited role in the team, mainly because the club is competing in four competitions at the same time.

Arteta had some words on the situation back then: “Every player is very important, every player has a role. That role can change throughout the season… It’s part of the journey for any player at this level. Face it, challenge it and go for it.”

This loan really is the perfect chance for Nwaneri to get in some regular first team football and take his career to the next level, without losing sight of the fact that Arsenal still hold all the reins when it comes to one of their top young talents.
