Arsenal Loanee Ethan Nwaneri Faces Backlash After Dangerous Tackle in France

Young Arsenal talent Ethan Nwaneri has found himself at the heart of a heated debate following a controversial challenge during his loan spell at Marseille. The 18-year-old winger was involved in a high-profile incident in the French Cup that has divided opinions across the football community.

Nwaneri’s Loan Move to Marseille for More First-Team Action

Ethan Nwaneri, widely regarded as one of Arsenal’s brightest young prospects, made the switch to Ligue 1 side Marseille on loan in the January transfer window. The move was designed to give the teenager regular senior minutes — something that had become limited at the Emirates.

He made an instant impact, scoring on his debut in a victory over Ligue 1 leaders Lens, which briefly allowed Paris Saint-Germain to overtake them at the top. Nwaneri also featured in a 2-2 draw at Paris FC over the weekend, playing 67 minutes before being substituted.

Marseille’s 3-0 Coupe de France Win Over Rennes

On Tuesday night, Marseille hosted Rennes in the Coupe de France round of 16 at the iconic Vélodrome stadium. Roberto De Zerbi’s side delivered a strong performance, securing a convincing 3-0 victory and advancing to the quarter-finals.

The goals came from Amine Gouiri (early opener), former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Mason Greenwood, who has been rebuilding his career in France after his Premier League troubles.

The Tackle That Ignited the Backlash: What Happened?

The real talking point came around the 22-minute mark, with Marseille leading 1-0. Rennes midfielder Glen Kamara — a Finnish international with past experience at Rangers, Leeds United, and even five years in Arsenal’s academy as a junior — was advancing with the ball down the left wing.

Nwaneri, tracking back, launched into a sliding challenge from the side. Footage of the incident showed his studs catching Kamara’s ankle. While the contact appeared brief, it was enough to cause Kamara’s lower leg to buckle painfully.

The 30-year-old limped off the pitch shortly afterward, leaving the field wearing just one boot and one sock. He was unable to continue, forcing Rennes into an early substitution.

Yellow Card Decision Sparks Fierce Debate

Referee Thomas Leonard showed Nwaneri a yellow card for the foul. However, VAR was not in operation for this round-of-16 tie, leaving the on-field decision final.

The French football community erupted in discussion afterward. Many argued that the challenge met the criteria for a red card — endangering the safety of an opponent with excessive force and studs showing. French media outlets were particularly critical, with some describing it as a “horror challenge” or “very heavy tackle on the ankle that deserved a red card.”

Rennes boss Habib Beye (the former Newcastle defender) expressed frustration post-match, reportedly telling officials he believed a sending-off was warranted. Even Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi opted to substitute Nwaneri at half-time, possibly to shield him from further scrutiny or protect him in a heated encounter.

Marseille’s Turbulent Season and On-Pitch Style

The incident comes amid a chaotic period for Marseille. The campaign started with a training-ground brawl involving teammates Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe (both later moved on), and hit a low point with a disappointing early exit from the Champions League league phase.

Another training-ground clash — this time between Geoffrey Kondogbia and Arthur Vermeeren — occurred just before the Rennes game, though De Zerbi appeared to welcome the intensity.

On the pitch, Marseille under De Zerbi have developed a reputation for being aggressive, confrontational, and often a handful for referees and opponents. That fiery character was evident in this cup tie, even as they cruised to victory.

Looking Ahead for the Arsenal Youngster

Despite the controversy, Nwaneri remains a highly-rated talent with huge potential. His loan is without a recall option for Arsenal, and while he hasn’t ruled out a permanent stay in France, the focus now shifts to how he responds to this setback.

The Marseille faithful will hope he learns quickly from the experience, while Arsenal supporters will watch closely to see if the move continues delivering the senior exposure he needs.

Football moments like this remind us how fine the line can be between passion and recklessness — especially for a young player adjusting to a new league and culture.
