Toni Kroos Delivers Brutal Verdict on Arsenal’s Champions League Dream
Toni Kroos has cast doubt over Arsenal F.C.’s chances of winning the UEFA Champions League this season, suggesting their recent dip in form has weakened their status among Europe’s elite.
The former Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern Munich midfielder believes the Gunners are no longer among the standout contenders, pointing to their Premier League wobble as a sign of vulnerability.
Toni Kroos is unconvinced by Arsenal’s Champions League hopes
Back in October, Kroos had identified Arsenal as one of the strongest teams in Europe. But speaking on his podcast, he admitted that his stance has shifted as the season has progressed.
Kroos told Einfach mal Luppen:
“So in my opinion, there’s still no team just marching straight through. I think we talked about this back in October – who the Champions League favourites were.

“We came to the conclusion that there wasn’t one team that was 100% convincing as the clear favourite. We also said: let’s wait and see a bit more.”
His comments reflect a wider uncertainty surrounding this year’s Champions League, with no dominant force emerging across the knockout stages.
Arsenal’s recent Premier League wobble raises concerns
While Mikel Arteta’s side responded to draws against Brentford F.C. and Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. with statement wins over Tottenham Hotspur F.C. and Chelsea F.C., Kroos believes the dropped points have had consequences.
“Now we’ve seen more – who’s really in top form? Back then, Arsenal were probably among the most consistent, but they’ve also dropped points here and there recently, which has allowed City to close the gap again,” he added.
That reference to Manchester City F.C. highlights the fine margins at the top of the Premier League — and raises questions about whether Arsenal have the resilience required to conquer Europe.
Arsenal’s favourable Champions League route
Despite Kroos’ doubts, Arsenal arguably have one of the more favourable routes to the Champions League final. Avoiding some of Europe’s traditional heavyweights until the later stages has boosted optimism among supporters.
Their tactical discipline, improved squad depth, and growing experience under Arteta could still prove decisive. Yet consistency remains the key question.
Is there a clear Champions League favourite?
Kroos’ wider point is perhaps the most intriguing: there is no dominant team in this season’s Champions League.
Unlike previous campaigns where clubs such as Real Madrid or Manchester City entered the latter stages as overwhelming favourites, this year’s competition feels unusually open. That unpredictability may ultimately benefit Arsenal — if they rediscover their early-season consistency.
What Arsenal must do to win the Champions League
To turn belief into silverware, Arsenal must:
- Maintain defensive solidity in high-pressure knockout matches
- Convert chances more clinically against elite European opposition
- Manage squad rotation effectively amid domestic title pressure
- Avoid further momentum-shifting slip-ups
If they can balance Premier League ambition with European focus, Kroos’ doubts could yet be proven wrong.
