Marseille have announced what they hope to get from Ethan Nwaneri now that he’s loaned from Arsenal for the rest of the 2025/26 season.

This comes after news broke out that the 18-year-old Arsenal academy product has left the Emirates for a temporary stint with the French club, with none of the loan deal being an option to turn into a full transfer.

This loan is a cracking opportunity for Nwaneri – who has struggled to get a regular look-in for Mikel Arteta – now he can show off his skills week in week out on the pitch and really develop as a player.

Mikel Arteta has a very close relationship with the young lad and although he might be disappointed to see him go, he’s actually fully behind the move to Marseille – where Nwaneri will be working under Roberto De Zerbi, a coach who Arsene know & rate for his attacking style of play.

Nwaneri has the whole summer to make a big impression in France, because Arsenal have gone to great pains to point out that he’ll be coming back to North London at the end of it all – and they genuinely view him as a key part of their long term plans.

Marseille Outline Ethan Nwaneri’s Position

Marseille fans are absolutely delighted with the signing, & Nwaneri has already started to win them over by revealing that he was all set to join after a chat with Arsenal teammate William Saliba who highly recommended him to the club.

William Saliba himself had a season long loan spell at Marseille a few years back, which really helped him get his career back on track & establish himself as a top defender back at Arsenal.

It’s expected that Nwaneri will follow a similar path – though he might have to settle for a different position – probably playing on the right wing given his preferred role is as an attacking midfielder.

Marseille’s sporting director Medhi Benatia had a chat with Canal+ and explained that the reason for signing Nwaneri was basically because he will be regarded as cover for Mason Greenwood on the right wing.

“Nwaneri? He was the only position where we weren’t covered by Mason,” Benatia revealed when explaining how the decision to sign the Arsenal youngstar was made.

Don’t get the wrong idea though, Nwaneri wont be stuck on the right wing full stop, the signing simply fits with De Zerbi’s 3-4-3 system he likes to use at Marseille.

Ethan Nwaneri Poised to Excel at Marseille

This is a familiar ground for Nwaneri – he spent most of his breakout season last time round playing out wide for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, often covering for Bukayo Saka, and doing a more than decent job of it.

He showed that he’s got what it takes to excel in that role & now at Marseille he’s got the chance to take his game to the next level.

De Zerbi’s attacking style is designed to give forwards the freedom to roam – just ask Mason Greenwood, who often finds himself drifting into the middle of the pitch – and that should open up a world of possibilities for Nwaneri.

On paper, De Zerbi’s style and Nwaneri’s skills are a match made in heaven & that can only be good news for Arsenal, who’ll be hoping to welcome back a more rounded, more confident player come the summer.
