Arsenal Handed Huge Title Boost as Man City Star Rodri Faces Shock FA Ban
Manchester City star Rodri has landed in hot water with the Football Association (FA) over some pretty forthright comments about the referees after the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur a little while back.
Its the Ballon d’Or winner from Spain who now has to worry about the possibility of a ban, which couldnt come at a worse time for his team – giving Arsenal a chance to gain an advantage in the tightly contested Premier League title race.
Rodri’s Post Match Rant Lands Him in Trouble and Possible FA Ban

Its all about the last game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for City. They started off great, leading 2 nil but somehow ended up with a draw. There was some controversy after Dominic Solankes goal when replays suggested there might have been some contact on Marc Guéhi that could have led to a foul and a yellow card.

Rodri, understandably fed up, let rip in the post match press conference. He said: “I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral”
He then added, “ It’s not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”
Word is he had a bit of a go at the referees in a bit more detail in his interview with some journalists: “I never get drawn into talking about the refs – but they really do need to wake up and start paying attention its a bit of a pattern going on here… and its just not right”
Now the FA are having a go at Rodri saying he acted improperly in that press conference, making some pretty pointed comments about the ref that questioned whether they were biased or not – all of which contradict their rules.
Rodri has till the 18th of Feb 2026 to respond to the FA – if he gets found guilty then a bunch of independent bods will sit in judgment and decide what punishment to slap on him – which could be a suspension, a fine or a bit of both. Past cases have tended to involve fines rather than long bans.
Potential Impact on Manchester City’s Title Hopes

Rodri is – and lets be honest, it won’t come as a surprise to anyone – a world class midfielder and a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City machine. So when this guy is out of the team for even a tiny bit of time, it can be a pretty big deal in an Premier League season that’s looking increasingly intense by the week.
The title race is as close as you’d care to get – with Manchester City breathing down Arsenal‘s necks and making life extremely interesting in the top of the table. Any games Rodri can’t play in – especially ones against the big boys or ones that are super important – and that momentum might just shift in Mikel Arteta’s favour.
Of course, City are not exactly short on talent – they’ve got players like Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva who can step up to the plate when needed. But we all know how much they struggled when Rodri was out last season, so fans will be watching this situation very closely indeed to see if it ends up being a major problem.
What This Means for Arsenal – and the rest of the Premier League
For Arsenal fans this is right on cue – it couldn’t have come at a better moment. No ban has been officially handed out yet, but even the possibility of Rodri not being available is going to give their title push a bit of a boost – both psychologically and on the pitch.
It also kicks off the usual debate about how well referees are doing, and whether the officials are getting it right on the pitch.
And of course it brings to the fore the delicate balance between players speaking their minds and getting cautioned or even banned by the FA. How players can express themselves, and when they can and can’t – that’s another whole can of worms.
