Wenger and Vieira React to Arsenal Defeat Against Manchester United
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger lavished praise on Michael Carrick for masterminding Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win at the Emirates Stadium.
Just weeks into his role as interim head coach following Ruben Amorim’s departure, Carrick delivered a flawless game plan that stunned title favorites Arsenal.
Wenger, a veteran of fierce battles against Manchester United, highlighted the growing momentum in the Red Devils’ squad.
“I think there is something special happening at Manchester United,” Wenger said on beIN Sports. “The way they beat Manchester City and then Arsenal today was very convincing. When Arsenal equalized at 2-2, usually the home team pushes on to win. But United found the resources to score the third goal and win 3-2 away in a top match. I have to congratulate Carrick — he has created something.”
Arsenal’s Defensive Vulnerabilities Exposed in First Home Loss of the Season
Despite Arsenal remaining top of the Premier League table with a four-point lead after 23 games, Wenger pointed out clear cracks that Carrick and United successfully exploited.
“When you concede three goals at home, it’s difficult to win,” Wenger added. “The goals showed the contrast in styles: Manchester United’s play was well-built with good cohesion, while Arsenal’s were more about power and fighting, like the second goal from a corner.

“The first goal wasn’t clean play either. Arsenal gave everything but lacked patience and technical cohesion in the first half. For the first time, I felt their centre-backs were more nervous and less dominant than usual.”
Wenger concluded that Carrick has struck an excellent balance: “He has found a good formula mixing defensive stability with high technical quality.”
Patrick Vieira Calls for Arsenal to Return to Basics After Disappointing Display
Wenger’s concerns were echoed by his former captain Patrick Vieira, who analyzed the game as a Sky Sports pundit.
Vieira urged Arsenal to rediscover their identity: “They need to go back to basics, express themselves, play with freedom, and go forward.”
He was blunt about the performance: “Too many players didn’t perform today. This was a must-win game — they needed to send a message to the rest of the league.”

The defeat marks Arsenal’s first home loss of the season and opens up the title race, with Manchester United’s resurgence under Carrick adding fresh excitement to the campaign.
