Patrick Vieira Criticises Arsenal Captain Martin Odegaard After Shock 3-2 Defeat to Manchester United
Arsenal suffered a major setback in their Premier League title chase as Manchester United staged a stunning comeback to win 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium.
Goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, and a late wonderstrike from Matheus Cunha sealed the victory for Michael Carrick’s side, denting Arsenal’s lead at the top to just four points with 15 games remaining.
Club legend Patrick Vieira didn’t hold back in his post-match analysis, highlighting a lack of freedom and ambition from several key players.
He singled out captain Martin Odegaard for particular criticism, accusing him of playing too cautiously.
Vieira Urges Arsenal to Return to Basics After Disappointing Loss
Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Arsenal midfielder stressed the need for the team to rediscover their attacking instincts.
“They need to go back to the basics,” Vieira said. “To express themselves, play with freedom, and go forward. There were too many players that didn’t perform today.”

He described the match as a must-win opportunity for Arsenal to send a strong message to their title rivals, but felt the team fell short in big moments.
Key Arsenal Stars Under Fire from Vieira
Vieira pointed to several underperformers in the defeat:
- Bukayo Saka was “too quiet” despite being one of the Premier League’s top attacking talents. Vieira expected more impact from him in such crucial games.
- Leandro Trossard failed to deliver his usual threat.
- Gabriel Jesus worked hard but needed to be more involved in the box.
In midfield, Vieira praised Declan Rice as the standout performer, noting that too many others fell below their usual standards.
Vieira Targets Martin Ødegaard’s Cautious Approach
Vieira reserved his sharpest criticism for Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal’s technical leader and captain.
“Odegaard is one of the technical leaders of the team because of his vision and his last pass,” Vieira explained. “I would like to see him play higher, between the lines.”
He believes Ødegaard’s tendency to drop deeper makes him play it too safe.
“I think at times he plays it too safe, comes too close to the back four. You need those type of players closer to the goal.”

Impact on Arsenal’s Title Hopes
The loss has intensified pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side as the Premier League title race heats up.
With Manchester United’s dramatic comeback exposing vulnerabilities, Arsenal must now regroup and show more attacking freedom to maintain their challenge at the summit.
