Arsenal produced a dominant display to thrash Leeds United 4-0 at Elland Road, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

The standout performer was Noni Madueke, who stepped up brilliantly after a late injury to Bukayo Saka and then made a cheeky plea for one of his contributions to be reclassified as his own goal.

Late Call-Up Turns into Star Turn for Madueke

Bukayo Saka picked up a hip injury during the warm-up, forcing Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to make a quick change. Noni Madueke, who wasn’t even in the original starting lineup, was thrown into the fray just minutes before kick-off.

The England international didn’t need time to settle. He was the driving force behind Arsenal’s first-half dominance, creating chances and causing constant problems for the Leeds defense.

In the 27th minute, Madueke delivered a pinpoint cross that Martin Zubimendi rose to head home powerfully for the opening goal. That set the tone for what was to come.

The Controversial Second Goal – Madueke’s Corner Causes Chaos

Just 10 minutes later, Madueke swung in a dangerous inswinging corner. The delivery was full of pace and menace, aimed right at the near post.

Under pressure from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow came to punch clear but got it all wrong. He connected awkwardly, sending the ball ricocheting off the woodwork and into his own net.

The goal was officially recorded as an own goal by Darlow, but Madueke wasn’t convinced. He felt the corner was going in regardless of the keeper’s intervention.

Madueke’s Post-Match Plea: “Fix It for Me!”

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Madueke made his case clear and with a bit of humor:

“How can that be an own goal? It was going on target, if the keeper’s not in the goal then it goes in, so, I don’t understand how that’s an own goal. So Premier League please take a look at that and fix it for me.”

It was a light-hearted appeal from the winger, who was named Man of the Match for his all-around display. The goal would have given him his first Arsenal Premier League goal, but for now, it remains credited to Darlow.

Arsenal’s Ruthless Second Half Seals the Rout

Arsenal didn’t let up after the break. Viktor Gyokeres added a third around the 68th minute, steering home a cross from Gabriel Martinelli, before Gabriel Jesus wrapped up the scoring late on with a clinical finish.

The 4-0 scoreline was a statement win on the road against a tough Leeds side at Elland Road – a venue where big victories don’t come easy.

What the Arsenal Stars Said After the Game

Declan Rice highlighted the importance of the result and the team’s mindset:

“Off the back of the last three performances we knew how big today was. To win 4-0 is a massive win for us. We can control what we can control and we have to keep winning games and keep pushing. What will be will be. So far we are top in the Premier League and won eight out of eight in the Champions League.

We can’t complain about where we are. We are in a really strong position, we know as players we have a really good squad. Every game is a cup final. We have a long four months ahead but we are prepared. Let’s keep going and give it a good go.”

Mikel Arteta was full of praise for his side’s attitude and quality:

“To win 4-0 here is very difficult, let’s see when the next time that happens. Big credit to the boys. The team showed a real dominance, resilience and character and obviously quality. I really liked the attitude of the team.”

Why This Win Matters in the Title Race

This victory keeps Arsenal firmly in the driving seat at the top of the Premier League table. Their depth was on full show with Madueke stepping up seamlessly, proving once again that Mikel Arteta has options across the pitch.

For Leeds, it’s a tough day at the office, but Arsenal’s clinical edge and set-piece threat were too much on this occasion.

The focus now shifts to the next challenges – but for Noni Madueke, there’s still that lingering hope the Premier League might just “take a look” and hand him that goal. Fans will be watching to see if anything changes!
