Leeds vs Arsenal: Viktor Gyokeres’ Moment That Had Gabriel Jesus Fuming on the Sidelines

Arsenal delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League.

Goals from Martín Zubimendi, an own goal by Leeds keeper Karl Darlow, Viktor Gyökeres, and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed a ruthless performance for Mikel Arteta’s side. But amid the dominant display, one first-half incident involving Gyökeres caught attention — it left Gabriel Jesus visibly frustrated on the bench.

Gabriel Jesus Dropped to the Bench as Gyokeres Starts

Mikel Arteta made a bold call ahead of the clash, opting to start Viktor Gyokeres up front instead of Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian had featured in Arsenal’s previous Premier League outing against Manchester United but struggled to make an impact. Dropping to the substitutes’ bench, Jesus watched as his teammate took the opportunity with both hands.

Gyokeres, the summer signing from Sporting CP, has been Arsenal’s leading scorer this season. While his form has been inconsistent at times — often looking isolated without enough support — he thrived against Leeds. His physical presence troubled the home defence, he held up play effectively, and he linked well with midfielders and wingers.

The Set-Piece Moment That Sparked Frustration

Early in the first half, a cleverly worked corner from Noni Madueke found Gyokeres at the far post. The Swedish striker rose highest and directed a header back across goal — the kind of chance that screams “tap-in” for an alert forward.

Gabriel Jesus, who has scored several similar headed finishes in his career (including a memorable one against Brighton a couple of seasons back), clearly spotted the opportunity. From the sidelines, he threw his hands up in frustration as Kai Havertz failed to attack the ball aggressively enough. The chance drifted out of play harmlessly, and no one got on the end of it.

Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz captured the moment in their live blog: “Gabriel Jesus had his hands up in frustration on the sidelines after that Gyokeres chance. I remember the Brazilian striker scoring a similar goal from a corner at the back post in that position against Brighton a couple of seasons ago. The angle was tight, so not quite in the ‘sitter’ category, but a huge reminder of Arsenal’s set play threat.”

Gyokeres himself looked annoyed that the chance went begging, highlighting the high standards within the squad. Jesus’ reaction showed just how invested he remains, even when not starting.

How Support Behind Gyokeres Unlocked His Best Form

Gyokeres has had ups and downs since joining Arsenal. In games where he’s been left isolated, his impact has been limited. But against Leeds — and in recent outings — Arteta paired him with more support just behind, including Kai Havertz in a slightly deeper role.

The difference was clear: Gyokeres looked sharper, more involved, and eventually grabbed his goal in the second half (his sixth in the Premier League this season, making it 3-0). He now has 11 goals across all competitions, underlining his value as the team’s top scorer.

The setup worked so well that Arsenal’s attack flowed better overall. Noni Madueke impressed with assists, and substitutes like Jesus (who came on and scored a brilliant late fourth) added extra quality.

What Arsenal Must Do to Get the Best from Gyokeres Moving Forward

To keep Gyökeres firing on all cylinders, Arsenal need consistency in their approach. Playing Havertz or Jesus alongside or just behind him gives the Swede the platform he needs to thrive — occupying defenders, creating space, and finishing chances.

If creative players like Martin Ødegaard drop too deep without that forward support, Gyökeres can become isolated again, which benefits no one. Arteta seems to have found a formula that works, especially in big away games like this one at Elland Road.

This 4-0 win was more than just three points — it was a statement of intent from Arsenal in the title race. And moments like the one that frustrated Jesus remind us how much hunger and competition there is within the squad. With everyone pushing each other, the Gunners look in strong shape as the season heats up.
