“I Am Waiting” – Pep Guardiola Aims Dig at Arsenal After City’s January Business

Pep Guardiola has delivered a pointed message to Arsenal and other big-spending Premier League rivals, essentially telling them: prove your heavy investment with trophies — because Manchester City are waiting.

In a fiery press conference ahead of City’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle, the Catalan manager defended his club’s January business while turning the spotlight firmly onto those who have outspent them in recent years — with Arsenal very much included in his crosshairs.

Arsenal in the Firing Line as Guardiola Highlights Net Spend Reality

City completed two significant signings this January: Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, at a combined cost of around £84 million. The deals sparked fresh debate about City’s financial power, especially as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United stayed quiet in the winter window, saving their resources for the summer.

Critics suggested any silverware City win this season would simply reflect their ability to spend when it matters most. Guardiola wasn’t having it. He flipped the narrative by pointing to the cold, hard numbers on net spend (money spent on transfers minus money received from sales) over the last five years.

According to the Manchester City boss, his club ranks only seventh in the Premier League for that metric — meaning six other teams, including Arsenal, have a higher net spend in that period.

When asked about sporting director Hugo Viana’s work in bringing in two ready-made Premier League talents, Guardiola replied:

“Really good. I am a little bit sad and upset because net spend the last five years, we are seventh in the Premier League. I want to be the first. I don’t understand how the club don’t spend more money so I am a little bit grumpy with them.

“But, with the position like we were in the past, because we spent a lot, now six teams have to win the Champions League and Premier Leagues and FA Cups because they have spent more in the last five years.

“This is a fact. You can say opinions like ‘you played good’ or ‘you played bad’ – we can agree or disagree but those are facts. Good luck to the six teams that are in front of us in net spend over the last five years. Good luck, I am waiting.

“Nice quote, eh?”

The sarcasm was unmistakable. For years, Manchester City have faced accusations that their dominance stems purely from financial muscle. Now, Guardiola is throwing that same logic back at rivals like Arsenal — teams that have invested heavily in recent windows yet haven’t matched City’s trophy haul.

The Long-Standing Spending Debate Between City and Arsenal

This isn’t the first time Guardiola has referenced Arsenal’s spending in pointed fashion. He has previously made ironic comments about Mikel Arteta and the Gunners, suggesting that if Arsenal ever win the Premier League title, critics would credit it solely to money rather than coaching or player development — mirroring the narrative long applied to City.

With Arsenal widely recognised as one of the six clubs ahead of City in recent net spend tables (alongside Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Liverpool), Guardiola’s “I am waiting” line feels particularly directed at the north London club, who have been City’s closest challengers in recent title races.

Youthful Squad and Long-Term Confidence Despite the Barbs

Guardiola also used the moment to stress City’s broader strategy. The current squad is the youngest he’s managed in his decade at the Etihad, which brings growing pains but also huge promise.

“It is the reality,” he said when discussing recent dips in performance against top sides. “The second half [against Spurs] we have dropped what we have shown in the first. It is the youngest side we have had in 10 years and maybe we need to live it and stop trying to do what we did in the first halves. We have to grow with that, definitely.”

The January additions of Semenyo and Guehi fit this vision — experienced Premier League-ready players blended into a refreshed, younger group.

Carabao Cup Focus Amid the Transfer Talk

With the semi-final second leg against Newcastle on the horizon, Guardiola is determined to reach Wembley for a fifth time in 10 years in the competition.

“We have the chance to make our fifth final in 10 years in the Carabao Cup,” he added. “I prefer to start with 2-0 up but I know perfectly how many times we have played Newcastle – the pride they have. They are a Champions League team and it will be a tough game.

“We have to be prepared and play our game for our people, our fans and try and reach Wembley in March.”

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, Guardiola’s message to Arsenal and the rest is clear: you’ve spent more — now go and win with it. City, meanwhile, will keep doing what they’ve always done — competing at the highest level, regardless of the net spend tables.
