Arsenals long-standing interest in Turkish sensation Arda Guler could be about to get a major kick-start given the recent upheaval at the top of Real Madrid.
The appointment of Alvaro Arbeloa as head coach in place of Xabi Alonso is throwing the 20-year-old midfielder a curveball as he wonders what’s going to happen to his game time now that his old coach is gone.
Gulers Limited Opportunities at Real Madrid Just Got a Whole Lot More Complicated
Despite the massive promise he’s shown at the Santiago Bernabeu, Arda Guler just can’t seem to get a consistent run of games in.
Instead hes often stuck to the bench or brought on at the last minute, which is really hindering his chances of building up the consistency and confidence that you need to thrive at the highest level. This is a situation that lots of young superstars have found themselves in before, facing a daunting challenge when they cant get on the pitch and show what they can do.
Under previous coaches like Carlo Ancelotti and even the early part of Xabi Alonso’s tenure, Gulers minutes were always going to be limited – its a tough job to get game time when the opposition is so good and the coach is so picky with his tactics.

Mikel Arteta has always been a big fan of Guler – hasnt he drawn a few parallels with Odegaard’s career struggles before he too ended up at the Emirates and becoming a true star ? Its a recruitment strategy that really seems to work for Arsenal – identifying top young players who have the technical skills and vision to fit right in with the teams fast-paced, attacking style of play – and Guler fits the bill perfectly.
Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely but no official approaches have been made yet – they are just keeping their powder dry and waiting to see how things develop.
After all, one of their top sources, Defensa Central, are saying the club have never wavered in their interest in Guler and are still very much in the running to sign him if he becomes available.
Guler is Keen to See How His Future Pan Out
For Guler himself, the change of coach is a real double-edged sword. On the one hand, he loved playing under Alonso and was getting rave reviews as one of the worlds top young midfielders – even Neymar was raving about him.
On the other hand, the new boss Arbeloa is already being tested and the fact that he started his tenure with a shock Copa del Rey exit has left a lot of questions about where Guler fits in.
Guler seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach – willing to give the new boss a chance to get his team settled before making any big decisions about his future.
If he doesnt start to get consistent minutes, however, a move to Arsenal might start to look like a pretty attractive option.
With both clubs focused on the development and progress of their young players, it seems like the stars could soon be aligning for a transfer.
