Arsenal might not be done with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez just yet according to a fairly unexpected update from David Ornstein – a journalist who’s always worth listening to.

Apparently the Gunners have been keeping an eye on the Argentine striker for a while now, but that interest has been on hold, awaiting space to open up in their attacking line.

Julian Alvarez – The Striker The World Took Notice Of

The kid who was all the rage after winning the 2022 World Cup has now proven himself to be one of Europe’s top strikers in the process.

During his time at Manchester City, Alvarez showed off his skills by scoring 36 goals and getting another 19 assists in an impressive 103 competitive games.

Despite making the big switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer and splashing down a huge fee, Alvarez continued to show the world why he was worth buying – 29 goals in all competitions in his first season with the club aren’t bad going.

Arsenal did give their forward line a bit of a boost last summer by signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP and Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

Julian Alvarez was actually on the radar though before they ended up committing to Gyokeres, but according to David Ornstein speaking on Sky Sports Alvarezs name was still being kicked around internally last summer – and if there are any outgoings in the forward line then who knows what might happen with a potential move for the striker.

“Arsenal were considering him a little bit in the last market. His name came up, and it has since been reported,” Ornstein said. “You could see that sort of player coming into Arsenal. I think maybe if there’s scope, if there’s going to be some outward manoeuvring, loan or permanent, then there is a definite scope for arrival.”

Potential Competition and Transfer Hurdles

Adding Alvarez to the Arsenal squad would be a game-changer, especially considering his ability to play anywhere on the pitch and his knack for scoring goals.

However, the Gunners are likely to get in a bidding war for Alvarez, and Barcelona will probably be right there in the fray – they’re apparently looking at him as a direct replacement for Robert Lewandowski now that the Pole’s contract is up for renewal, and maybe even the Blues at Chelsea will take a swing.

Atletico Madrid are going to make life very difficult for whoever’s trying to sign Alvarez. Sources say they’ll want no less than £87m – and that’s being pretty conservative, as some reckon it could be as much as £105m to get them to budge on this one.
