Conor Bradley, the Liverpool defender, has now been ruled out for the rest of the season following surgery.

Martinelli Warned of Potential Court Case Over Liverpool’s Bradley Injury

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli was involved in a pretty messy on-field altercation with Liverpool defender Conor Bradley and its a bit of a shock to see the Liverpool defender ruled out for the rest of the season following surgery – and it’s already sparked renewed debate about player conduct and where the line should be in football when it comes to accountability.

Now the incident itself occurred when Martinelli gave Bradley a bit of a shove off the pitch while Bradley was already hurt – but to be fair, Martinelli didn’t know at the time how seriously Bradley had been hurt – which turned out to be a pretty significant injury that will have Bradley out for several months.

So after the incident had happened, there was a bit of a confrontation between Martinelli and some of his Liverpool teammates. And subsequently, Liverpool’s manager came out and stuck up for the Brazilian winger in his post-match comments.

A Ruckus Over Player Conduct and Accountability

This whole thing has got a lot of people talking, what with ongoing worries about whether players have a sense of responsibility when serious injuries happen during games.

And even though there hasn’t been any disciplinary action taken against Martinelli yet, it’s certainly raised some interesting questions about awareness and keeping a lid on things on the pitch.

Former Prem referee Keith Hackett reckons this sort of thing is symptomatic of a bigger problem in football these days – the fact that serious injuries can have some pretty long-lasting consequences.

Former Referee Warns That Players Need to Watch Their Backs

Hackett says that its not unusual for him to be involved in cases where players have taken their opponents to court, claiming that an injury they suffered on the pitch has ruined their career. He’s been involved in a few of these cases lately, actually.

“I’ve been in this situation recently where one player has taken another to court claiming that an injury he got on the pitch has ruined his career” , Hackett told Football Insider

And one thing he pointed out is that the financial implications of a long term injury – not just for the individual player but also for the clubs – have got to the point where its becoming more common for players to take action

Clubs Are Exposed to the Risk of Legal Action Too

But thats not the only risk, Hackett went on to say that clubs could also find themselves on the receiving end of a lawsuit if they feel that an opponent’s conduct led to the loss of one of their key players.

“Of course there is a risk, and a club could always try to sue a player because they’ve lost a key player” , he said.

Duty of Care – Something to Think About

And finally Hackett made a point that footballers do have a duty of care towards their opponents, especially when its clear that an injury is serious. And he asked why the incident wasn’t managed better on the pitch.

“Footballers do have a duty of care towards their opponents” he said
“Could the ref have done something sooner? I’m a bit surprised no-one realised just how serious the injury was because there wasn’t an overreaction.”
