Lip-Reader Reveals Declan Rice’s Heated Tunnel Clash with Arsenal Coach Albert Stuvenberg
Declan Rice got caught up in a fiery exchange with Arsenal assistant coach Albert Stuvenberg in what was going on behind the scenes during the Gunners’ wild 3-2 victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
An expert lip-reader has now been having a look and has revealed the explosive words that were being banded about in the tunnel, where tempers were running high despite Arsenal still being in charge with a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Tunnel Incident: What the Lip-Reader Saw
A camera managed to catch the intense moment as Rice went head to head with Stuvenberg – affectionately known as ‘AirPod Albert’ to the fans thanks to his love of those wireless earbuds.
According to lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman, talking to the Daily Mail, things went down like this:
- Rice started off by telling Stuvenberg to just “shut it & walk away”
- Centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes was straight in there, trying to placate the pair by telling Stuvenberg to “stop, please stop, stop”.
- An understandably frustrated Rice then blurted out “What the bloody hell is he on about” which just made things worse.
- Things got even more heated when Rice delivered the low blow of saying “I think he’s got no idea what’s going on”
- The whole thing ended with Gabriel trying his best to calm things down, repeatedly telling Rice & Stuvenberg to “calm down, stop, calm down”
The whole time Gabriel was standing between the pair, trying to pull things back from the brink – which highlights just how important he was in trying to defuse the situation.

Arsenal’s hard fought win at Stamford Bridge
The row happened when Arsenal were leading 1-0 thanks to Ben White’s early header from a pinpoint Declan Rice corner – which was their 24th set-piece goal of the season.
Things then kicked off in the second half, with Viktor Gyokeres making it 2-0 after a mistake by Robert Sanchez and then Martin Zubimendi scored a real screamer, putting the Gunners 3-0 up. Chelsea did give it a late try though, getting goals back from Alejandro Garnacho but the Gunners held on to get a valuable 1-0 lead in the aggregate ahead of the second leg at the Emirates.
The win showed just how resilient and clever Arsenal can be under Arteta, even when there’s tension going on behind the scenes.
Who Is ‘AirPod Albert’? Arsenal’s Trusted Right Hand Man
Albert Stuvenberg has been a key part of Arteta’s backroom team since 2019, and the two have a real bond from their time studying for those UEFA coaching licenses together in Wales.

The Dutchman has had a pretty varied career so far, which includes
- 13 years at Feyenoord, where he helped develop a bunch of top players including Robin van Persie.
- Working with the Dutch youth national teams.
- Being an assistant at Manchester United under Louis Van Gaal, Genk in Belgium and the Welsh national team.
In 2022 he even took temporary charge of Arsenal while Arteta was isolating with COVID-19. The way he stays calm under pressure and is a tactical genius has made him a real asset to the team, which is why he’s known as ‘airPod Albert’ from his love of using those earbuds to communicate on the pitch.
Passion and Fire : A hallmark that sets winning teams apart
Its not the only flashpoint of the night by the way – Martin Zubimendi & Gabriel Jesus had a run in with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez after the final whistle had gone.
But make no mistake, that sort of intensity is more often than not a good thing. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry once said that the Invincibles’ era was really driven by fierce competition – even in training. The desire to win and do whatever it takes to win, sometimes even going at it in training … He said :
“We were all competitors who’d do anything to win… We’d have battles in training sometimes… you dont win things unless you have that mentality. Thats what drives you – that ego, that respect for the team. Battles happen when youve got players around you pushing you to give your all”

For Arsenal, this sort of sparring on the sidelines after a big away win – could just be another sign that this is a team driven by high standards & a real hunger to win silverware.
The second leg is going to be a real drama fest – & probably a few fireworks – as Arsenal chase a spot in the Carabao Cup final.
