John Terry Reacts as Arsenal Fail to Match Chelsea’s Premier League Defensive Record
John Terry has rubbed salt in Arsenal’s wounds after their latest setback, declaring Chelsea’s iconic Premier League defensive record safe for another year.
The Blues’ legendary captain, who anchored Jose Mourinho’s unbreakable backline in the 2004-05 season, couldn’t resist a cheeky social media post following Arsenal’s defeat.
Arsenal’s Defensive Dream Ends After 23 Games
Arsenal can no longer match Chelsea’s historic record of just 15 goals conceded in a full Premier League season. With 15 games remaining, the Gunners have now shipped 17 goals in 23 matches this campaign.
While their defence, led by the formidable pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba, remains the league’s best, it falls short of the “untouchable” benchmark set by Mourinho’s Chelsea 21 years ago.
Early Promise Fades After Strong Start
Talk of Arsenal breaking the record ignited in the early months of the season. After eight Premier League games, they had conceded just three goals — an astonishing rate of 0.38 per game, projecting to around 14.4 for the full 38-match campaign.
Fans and pundits alike speculated about one of football’s most enduring modern records being shattered.

However, a recent defensive dip has ended those hopes. Arsenal’s tally now stands at 17 goals conceded after 23 games, making it mathematically impossible to finish below Chelsea’s 15.
John Terry’s Relief and Earlier Nerves

Terry, now 44, was at the heart of that legendary 2004-05 Chelsea side. He had previously admitted feeling “worried” about the record being erased, saying in November: “I have to say I’m actually a little bit worried now. I’m looking at their fixtures on a weekly basis… but I have to give them credit, they look very good at the moment. I still think it’s going to be too much, but being honest, I’m a little nervous.”
On Sunday night, his relief was clear: “The record is safe for another year.”
Costly Defeat to Manchester United Hits Title Hopes
The moment that sealed Arsenal’s fate came in a dramatic 3-2 home loss to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium. United staged a thrilling comeback, with Matheus Cunha scoring a stunning late winner just three minutes after Mikel Merino’s equaliser.
Arsenal had taken the lead through an own goal by Lisandro Martinez in the 29th minute. But errors — including a horror backpass from Martin Zubimendi — allowed United to level through Bryan Mbeumo, before Patrick Dorgu fired them ahead shortly after halftime.
Merino’s late strike from a corner looked to have salvaged a point, only for Cunha’s thunderbolt to hand interim manager Michael Carrick his second win in as many games.
Blow to Arsenal’s Title Bid
The defeat — Arsenal’s first league loss at home this season — has dented their Premier League title challenge.
With Manchester City and Aston Villa both winning recently, the gap at the top has narrowed, casting doubt over ending their 22-year wait for the championship.
Despite the setback, Arsenal’s defence continues to impress overall, but Chelsea’s record remains intact, much to Terry’s delight.
