‘Compared to Other Teams’ – Cristian Chivu Gives Honest Verdict After Arsenal Beat Inter 3–1
Inter Milan took a three goal bounce to the face from Arsenal in their recent Champions League showdown, prompting their head coach Cristian Chivu to give a refreshingly honest take on how they’d struggled.
In a press after the game, the 45 year old, who’s seen alot of football in his time, pointed out straight away that Arsenal outshone his team – not just by a bit either – in terms of skill, speed, and overall team cohesion.
This loss – which made it three CL knock-backs on the trot for Inter – is the latest in a pretty bleak run of results that also saw them go down to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.
Now with the new season setup kicking in, the Inter Milan team have got a real worry on their hands – they might just miss out on a top eight spot for the second season running.
And to make matters worse, they’ve got a crunch final round of fixtures against Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park.
Cristian Chivu Delivers Verdict After Arsenal Beat Inter 3–1

Cristian Chivu didn’t beat about the bush with his analysis – he pointed out the bits where Arsenal were just plain better than his side. “They were stronger in terms of technique at speed, intensity, and positioning on the pitch,” he told Sky Sport via FCInterNews.
He had a fair point to make about Arsenal’s attacking power as well: “Their ideas when attacking the lines and winning second balls were where they arrived with real force.”
Chivu reckons that Inter had their moment in the sun in the first half, and even managed to level the score at 1-1 at one point. However, it was a stroke of bad luck that swung the game Inter’s way – a clearance hit the crossbar and bounced out for an Arsenal player, and suddenly the momentum shifted.
In the second half, Arsenal really upped the ante – they dropped deeper and showed off how strong they were on the back foot, with all that structure, physicality, and quality of their own.
Chivu also had a bit of a think about his own tactical choices, particularly about leaving Luis Henrique on the pitch even though the attack just wasn’t working that day. “We did it at the end, I don’t know if it was too late,” he admitted, “I’m not so sure if it was too late in the day though.” And then he had to explain why he’d stuck with a 4-4-2 rather than making a switch to 4-3-3 – mainly because he just didn’t have enough attacking options to make it work.
Inter’s Champions League Woes Continue to Mount
This latest defeat only adds to the woes of Inter Milan in high-stakes European matches. Petar Sucic scored with his second Champions League start, but it seems that’s not quite enough to turn things around for the club. Chivu now joins the list of Inter managers since 2011 to have lost three straight Champions League matches.
The Nerazzurri looked particularly exposed, struggling with some individual actions and crosses on that right flank. He praised his lads for their focus, but admitted that yeah, there were gaps: “We may have lacked that individual spark on the right and were struggling with crosses, but I’ve got to give credit to Luis Henrique for putting in a strong game.”

Arsenal Show Off Their Class in the Process
You get a sense that Chivu was genuinely impressed by what he saw from Arsenal – and that admiration really came through in his verdict.
Mikel Arteta’s got some real depth in his squad, and it’s not just that he can pick out guys like Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Viktor Gyokeres to come on and make a real difference.
The flexibility he showed really spoke volumes about the Gunners’ strength in depth and how they were able to turn around last season’s loss at San Siro.
When asked about Arsenal, Chivu said, “When they press you like that, they have intensity, organisation, and a strong attacking presence in the box thanks to their quality and technique.”
He was particularly complimentary about their decision making: “The level of technique they showed impressed me compared to other teams – the decision is always the right one, and they have the speed to find a teammate making a run with a single touch.”
You can see why he was so impressed – from the likes of Bukayo Saka on the right, who was giving Inter’s defenders a really hard time. He was careful not to get onto his team about not spending enough, but you could sense he was using the Premier League as a benchmark: “The Premier League is a top league in terms of intensity; we’re not yet used to this type of match.”
Looking Forward for Inter Milan – Time for Growth
Despite the loss, Chivu remains pretty optimistic about Inter’s development. “We’re trying to continue our growth step by step. It’s important to maintain the belief that what we’re doing is the right thing.”

The coach is keen to work on getting a bit more execution out of some of his team’s set plays, although he admits it’s a tough job. As Inter prepare to face Dortmund, he’s hoping that this sort of honest reflection will help them improve in the Champions League.
