Ange Postecoglou Handed Arsenal Asignment Months After Tottenham Exit

Ange Postecoglou, a highly respected Greek-Australian coach, is back in the game, albeit after a bit of a rough patch with the Premier League.

Following his messy exit from Tottenham Hotspur and a short but dismal spell at Nottingham Forest, Postecoglou’s joined UEFA as a Technical Observer – a move that puts him alongside some of the biggest names in football like former England managers Gareth Southgate and Roy Hodgson, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the current Portugal boss Roberto Martinez

This new role gives him a chance to rub shoulders with some top-class talent and UEFA have been quick to praise his credentials : “Having established his coaching reputation in Australia, Greece-born Ange Postecoglou took his attacking style of play to Europe, winning a domestic double and then a domestic treble in two seasons at Celtic, before steering Tottenham to UEFA Europa League glory in 2024/25.”

From Spurs Glory to Tough Times in the Premier League

Postecoglou’s time at Tottenham was full of both highs and lows. In ’25, he finally ended the club’s 17-year wait for a new trophy by winning the UEFA Europa League. But it was all downhill from there – the club slumped to a dismal 17th place in the Premier League and he was out the door just a short time later.

Then, in September 2025, he took over at Nottingham Forest but that stint lasted a miserable 39 days & with no wins in eight games – that’s got to be some sort of record for the shortest managerial stint in Premier League history.

Needless to say those back-to-back setbacks made everyone doubt he’d be back in management in a hurry – hence his move over to UEFA & more analysis than actual match-day stress.

Gunners run out comfortable 3-1 winners vs Inter to secure a top-two finish in the League Phase.

First Task: Scouting Arsenal’s Champions League Masterclass

Postecoglou’s first taste of being a UEFA Technical Observer was a trip to the San Siro to watch Inter Milan take on Arsenal in their Champions League match. The Gunners simply had too much for their Italian opponents putting in a 3-1 win and moving up to second in the League Phase – and making it a whole 7 in a row for them.

Working with UEFA’s performance analysis team Postecoglou was able to review the match footage with the benefit of the teams and coaches having access to multi-angle views of the game – including views from the broadcast camera, tactical analysis and some time the high angle shots. This was either done in person or from the comfort of his own home.

Praise for Gabriel Jesus: “A True Goalscorer’s Instincts”

Arsenal’s destruction of Inter Milan thanks in no small part to the clinical finish of Gabriel Jesus who scored two in the first half and received the man of the match award.

Postecoglou was full of praise “Jesus’ alertness in the box gave Arsenal a cutting edge to complement their ability to create opportunities from various avenues.

“Both goals were instinctive. The first was from a mis-hit shot that he was able to capitalise on and the second from a rebound off the crossbar. Both are a demonstration of a goalscorer’s instincts as, while others are watching, he is anticipating an opportunity to score.”

Contributing to UEFA’s Big-Picture Analysis

By analysing team and player performances on a match by match basis UEFA’s Technical Observers are able to help shape the end-of-season honours. The technical observers all contribute to this pool of analysis. All of this analysis informs the selection of the Team of the Season, Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season and the Goal of the Season.

For Postecoglou this job also offers him the chance to stay involved in top level football – as and when he decides to call on his managerial experience again – and with the Arsenal job being one of the potential next stops on his journey – this assignment looks like being a top one.
