Alan Shearer: Only PSG Can Stop Arsenal from Winning the Champions League
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been spouting off some pretty lofty predictions about Arsenals chances in the UEFA Champions League.
Shearer reckons Mikel Arteta’s side are going all the way to the final in Budapest this May but will fall at the last hurdle against the reigning champs, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Arsenal are having one of those seasons that makes you wonder if they’re actually for real. They’ve been absolutely flying through Europe, and its getting harder to deny the fact that they’re a serious contender for the trophy.
Arsenal’s Unbeaten Run Makes Them a Legitimate Contender
Shearer had a crack at saying what’s on his mind on Amazon Prime Video just before Arsenal’s 3-1 trouncing of Inter Milan at the San Siro. And he was full of praise for the Gunners’ stunning performance in the league phase.
Mikel Arteta’s team have been on a roll, winning all seven of their Champions League games and securing a home advantage in the knockout stages second legs.
That win over last seasons contenders Inter Milan showed just how deep this squad is – Gabriel Jesus got his hands on two goals, and Viktor Gyokeres chipped in with a late stunner to put the icing on the cake.

Shearer was waxing lyrical about Arsene’s lot, saying “T”There is no doubt that this mob tonight, Arsenal, have got a really good chance of being there. But I just think because of what PSG did last year, the players that they have, I’m just going to edge it with PSG. But Arsenal won’t be far away.”
He went on to say “Probably Arsenal [to reach the final]. I think with the confidence and the belief that Arsenal have. And you’ve seen with the turnover of players in terms of the squad that he can leave on the squad and they still look a very, very strong team and a team capable of coming and winning.”
Why PSG Are Still the Team to Beat
As holders, it’s no surprise PSG are the yardstick for everyone else to measure themselves by. Their record run last season just about culminated in that blowout 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the final – and lets be real, that’s left a lasting impression on the football world. Aulds Shearer reckons their wealth of experience and star power make them the only outfit with the chops to stop Arsenal in their tracks.
The idea of an Arsenal vs PSG final would be a match made in heaven, but Shearer’s tipping the French giants to hold onto their crown.
Arsenal Emerging as the Most Complete Team in Europe
Arsenal are on fire right now, making waves all over the place. They’re running away with the Premier League too – a full seven points clear of Manchester City as things stand – and the League Cup tie is all but sewn up after their 3-2 win at Chelsea. They’re also chugging along nicely in the FA Cup.
Their incredible form has left fans and pundits alike dreaming up all sorts of posibilities for Mikel Arteta this season – and Shearer thinks Arsenal could well reach the top of European football. Problem is, he still thinks PSG’s got the edge
