Mikel Arteta Gives Update on Arsenal’s January Transfer Plans
Mikel Arteta has let it be known that Arsenal are ready to make their move in the January transfer window , but they’re going to have to wait and see if the right opportunity comes along.
The Arsenal manager put his cards on the table by saying “When there is an opportunity, you have to act.” – words to live by.
This comes as no surprise really – given that Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League – six points clear – and looking good to win that elusive top-flight title in over twenty years under Arteta’s tenure.
Expectations for a Quiet January Window
Loads of people thought that the Gunners were going to keep their heads down and take a low-key approach to the January window, especially after splashing the cash in the summer to strengthen the squad across the board.
So far the only confirmed business has been 19-year-old academy midfielder Louie Copley leaving the club on loan to Crawley Town in League Two for the rest of the season & that’s about it.
Despite being in a very comfortable position at the top of the table & doing alright in a few competitions too , Arteta has reminded everyone that Arsenal are always looking to pounce on the right moment – a way of thinking that has helped shape the team we see today & one that has even helped nurture a player like William Saliba who’s done a great job at developing his game – a patient approach that’s all part of the club’s long-term vision.
The Importance of Character and Personality in Recruitment
When Mikel Arteta’s being asked about the time they spend evaluating potential signings, he stresses that character and personality play a super critical role in Arsenal’s recruitment process.

“The ideal scenario is that we spend all the time necessary to nail the process and to understand exactly how we envisage this player joining our club, the team and the relationship we want to build up,” Arteta said.
“The reality is: sometimes when there is an opportunity, you have to act. But we have to try and be prepared and I think, in general, we make very good choices and get top characters and personalities.”
This is a perfect illustration of Arsenal’s new approach to recruitment, where on-pitch ability needs to be matched with the club’s overall atmosphere.
Balancing Talent and Cultural Fit
Arteta was asked whether Arsenal have ever turned down a talented player, just because he didn’t quite fit in.
“I think you put everything in balance,” Arteta explained. “I don’t think it is just a case of being a bad person.
“It is, ‘can he deal with that role?’ – and the consequences to that. We have to know if he can fill the role and deal with all the characters we have. It is a decision which has to be balanced.”
That measured approach is key to the team’s success – it explains why the likes of Saliba are able to lead the team with such confidence.

With the January transfer window heading towards its deadline, Arteta’s comments suggest that Arsenal aren’t desperate for signings, but they will move if they find the right player – someone with both the ability and the character to slot right in.
