Arsenal Join Transfer Race for Brazilian Wonderkid Iago Machado
Arsenal are showing an increasing interest in Brazilian defensive whiz Iago Machado, the 16-year-old star from Corinthians, in a bid to beef up their youth ranks with one of the most promising young centre-backs in South America.
Arsenal Eyeing Future Defensive Star from Corinthians
According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Arsenal have made contact with both Corinthians and the player’s agents.
The Gunners see 16-year-old Iago as a vital addition to their youth team – and it’s clear that they’re eyeing a move in the future, although not before he turns 18, naturally. That’s due to the FIFA regulations on international transfers for anyone under 18.
This move fits with Arsenal’s long-term plan to bring in top young talent from all around the world – and they’re particularly keen on players from Brazil.
Competition from Ajax and Corinthians’ Protective Measures
Arsenal aren’t the only club in the running for Iago Machado’s signature though. Ajax have been sniffing around in recent weeks and making their moves, but Corinthians aren’t about to let him go lightly.
They’ve recently signed Iago to a new contract which has hiked up his salary, and slaps a massive €100 million price tag on his transfer. No one’s expecting any serious talks about renewal right now, but you can bet Corinthians will play it tough if anyone comes knocking.

Who Is Iago Machado? The Rising Brazilian Defender

Born on February 17, 2009, Iago Machado has been at Corinthians since he was six years old. He’s been working his way up the youth ranks ever since, getting to train with the U20s and even breaking into the first team under coach Dorival Júnior.
At a pretty impressive 1.87 metres (6ft 2 inches) – Iago already has what coaches consider the makings of a top-level centre-back : He’s got the brains to read the game, excellent technique, leadership skills and even the ability to pop up with goals from set pieces or in the air.
He’s already shown what he’s got in the tough Copinha (São Paulo Youth Cup), even scoring a goal in four appearances despite getting knocked out early.
Why Arsenal Are Keen on This Brazilian Prodigy
Iago Machado is basically the perfect defender – big and physical, yet technically sound and solid under pressure. As Arsenal build up their young talent pipeline, signing someone like Iago could be a real coup in the long run.

With several European clubs now circling, all eyes will be on how this transfer saga plays out in the coming months – will Arsenal be able to sign this Brazilian sensation? We’ll be keeping an eye on it and bringing you all the latest updates!
